On being elected Zuhayb said: “What I am feeling now is what all 16 of us have been feeling for the last few weeks. Other next year I have 15 other people working with me that feel as passionately as I do about this campaign and together we can and will make a difference.”
Message from Sir Robin
The last few weeks have been exciting and inspiring for the young people of Newham – and for me – with 16 enthusiastic and passionate candidates campaigning across the borough to win your votes and convince you that their vision for young people is the right vision.
My congratulations go to Zuhayb Ahmed on being elected as the first ever Young Mayor of Newham and Hamid Sheikh on winning the role of Deputy – but perhaps more importantly I want to congratulate every young person who took part; whether that was by nominating another young person, by running as a candidate, by voting in the election – you have all taken a huge step forward together – making sure you have a direct and democratic say on the issues that affect you.
Now the real challenge begins; the Young Mayor and Youth Council will spearhead the development of better services for young people, engaging every young person, shaping their lives and delivering a real difference on our streets.
Your voice counts – it’s up to you!
Sir Robin Wales
Mayor of Newham
